“The Aspen Society programs are an important part of my continuing education. The knowledge I have acquired over the years has given me confidence to move from thought to action – to say what I believe and to do what I can.”

Sue Oates, Longtime Society Member

What is the Aspen Society?

The Aspen Society is a national community of diverse and distinguished leaders who sustain and support the
values-based work of the Aspen Institute. Society members enjoy unparalleled access to Institute programs and events, including unique experiences with nationally recognized speakers and thought leaders. They are the first to know about Aspen Institute events, and they receive special invitations to member-exclusive programs across the country.

The early days of the Aspen Institute and the Aspen Society (formerly known as the Society of Fellows) were rooted in the Aspen Executive Seminar: an eight-day retreat for American businessmen to re-evaluate their values, guided by the texts of Aristotle, Plato, the Federalist Papers, and other notable Western works included in University of Chicago professor Mortimer Adler’s Great Book Series.

The Aspen Society was founded in 1964 as an alumni program for Executive Seminar participants so that
they could keep in touch and continue learning together. The original membership consisted of 33 Seminar
alumni who met in Elizabeth Paepcke’s living room in Aspen, CO and engaged in strengthening the humanities to give greater meaning to man and wiser direction to society.

Since 1964, the Aspen Society has continued to embrace the seminar model by offering symposia on
a variety of topics, such as “Globalization and the Human Condition” and “Medical Ethics: The Roots of
Healthcare Debate”. Today, these dialogues moderated by leading experts continue to provide an in-depth
exploration of current events and enduring issues from arts and culture to foreign and domestic policy.

Who We Are

We are at a moment that calls for artists and cultural leaders to imagine and lead toward the world we wish to see. Beyond the pursuit of artistic excellence lies a deeper question:

What kind of leadership does the world need and what is the role of the arts in advancing it?

The Michael D. Eisner Arts & Culture Fellowship, a pilot initiative in partnership between the Aspen Global Leadership Network and Aspen Arts Program, will bring together two cohorts of 20–22 intergenerational leaders from across the global arts ecosystem — artists, creators, producers, financiers, curators, and cultural visionaries — who have achieved success in their fields and seek to expand their impact.

Modeled after the Aspen Institute’s Henry Crown Fellowship launched in 1997, Fellows will gather four times for week-long seminars, engaging in moderated dialogue that challenges participants to clarify their role as leaders in the world.

Every enduring human-made institution began not with policy but with vision—with the capacity to see and feel a world that does not yet exist. This is the domain of the arts: to make the improbable palpable, to render the future habitable before we arrive there. When our old methods fail us, we need more than new management. We need new myths, new metaphors, new music. We need the arts to build the emotional and imaginative infrastructure that will support whatever comes next.

Dar Vanderbeck | Vice President, Aspen Global Leadership Network, The Aspen Institute

Why Now?

Leadership Gap

While opportunities to cultivate technical mastery are abundant, arts leaders rarely have the space to grapple with fundamental questions: How do the arts advance a better world? And what is my responsibility in that work? The Michael D. Eisner Arts & Culture Fellowship offers the time, structure, and community for deep reflection, dialogue, and growth as leaders shaping the cultural fabric of society.

Leadership & Imagination

The arts don’t just reflect society — they shape it, challenge it, and help us envision better versions of it. By bringing together those who make art, create conditions for art to be made, and bring art to the world, we’re cultivating the kind of humanistic, values-driven leadership that can help us navigate our most complex challenges with both moral clarity and creative imagination.

Creative Collaboration for Global Impact

The arts have always bridged cultures and inspired collective imagination. Today, collaboration among global arts leaders can spark new approaches to tackle our greatest challenges. The Fellowship creates a global, intergenerational network of creative minds working together to envision and build a more just, vibrant, and open society.

“This initiative creates space for arts leaders to reconnect with their deepest motivations and emerge reinvigorated in their commitment to work that matters. By building community across disciplines, we amplify their capacity to inspire and shape cultural narratives that help envision a more just, vibrant, and open society.”

Danielle Baussan | Executive Director, Arts & Society Program, The Aspen Institute

ANNOUNCEMENT

Art, Leadership, and the Power of Cultural Imagination

As part of the Aspen Institute’s 75th anniversary campaign, the Eisner Arts & Culture Fellowship invites us to explore how arts and culture shape the world we live in. Through this Fellowship, the Aspen Global Leadership Network and the Arts Program join forces to strengthen the role of arts leaders as catalysts for positive change.

  • leaders who make art (creators, performers, painters, design leaders, writers, dancers);
  • leaders who create conditions for art to be made (producers, agents, financers, artist residency directors, academics); and
  • leaders who bring art to the world (studio executives, gallery owners, museum curators, magazine editors, film festival executives and others who determine how art circulates, build audiences, shape discourse, and facilitate meaningful encounters between art and the public).

Fellows are selected through a rigorous, multi-step process that includes nomination review, interviews in-person (locations to be announced), and final approval by the Aspen Institute and the Eisner Foundation.

For questions about nominations, please email eisnerfellowship@aspeninstitute.org.

The WIN Challenge logo in a lockup with Aspen Digital's logo.

Launched in fall 2025, the Workplace Innovation Now (WIN) Challenge is a new initiative led by Aspen Digital, a program of the Aspen Institute. Aspen Digital will leverage its expertise in emerging technology and narrative change to unlock new opportunities and partner with the Institute’s Economic Opportunities Program, drawing on its long experience helping people thrive in a changing economy.

Supported by Pivotal, a group of organizations founded by Melinda French Gates, the WIN Challenge aims to discover and scale innovative ideas that will help women thrive and everyone win in a rapidly changing workplace. The $60 million grant competition is focused on three key pillars: Culture & Practices, AI, and Narrative. It will look for scalable solutions to improve workplace culture and practices, leverage AI to build a workplace that supports everyone, and reshape narratives and norms. Up to eight innovative awardees per pillar will each receive grants of either $2.5 million or $5 million to implement their solution.

“As the workplace goes through profound shifts, driven by rapidly emerging new technologies, it is critical that we make sure that everyone has the opportunity to realize their full potential. The WIN Challenge reflects the Aspen Institute’s deep commitment to strengthening economic opportunity and trust across society by investing in workplace innovations that serve the needs of all. We are grateful to Melinda French Gates and Pivotal for their leadership in this vital effort.”

Dan Porterfield President & CEO of the Aspen Institute

“Women—especially mothers of young children—are leaving the workforce at an alarming rate, driven out by inflexible policies, rising childcare costs, bias, and harassment. Now is the time to invest in better workplaces: ones that support balance, ensure safety for all workers, and recognize women as essential leaders. When we remove barriers for women, we unlock potential across the entire economy.”

Selected for their commitment to long-view leadership and potential to drive impact, Fellows engage in a process of deep reflection, cross-sector dialogue, and enduring peer connection. The initiative challenges leaders to think beyond innovation — to reckon with power, responsibility, and the future they’re helping to build.

Who We Are

We are at a crossroads that calls for the leaders of today’s technological landscape to reckon with decisions that will shape the future of humanity. Beyond the narratives of technology as either salvation or catastrophe lies a pressing question: What kind of leadership does this digital era require?

The Technology Leaders Initiative will launch with a cohort of 20 senior leaders in and ascending to positions of significant power in the global technology landscape – from policy shapers to industry pioneers. Over two years, they will undergo a thought-provoking journey of personal exploration moving beyond success to a place of growing impact.

Why Now?

Leadership Gap

Most global alliances in frontier technology focus on products and policy, but not always on building the type of networks necessary to counter the global distrust in the technology landscape. We must give senior leaders the protected space to wrestle with the deep ethical questions of our time.

Points of Power

The emerging concentration of power in new technology landscapes requires working directly with leaders of today’s most critical platforms to effect change.

Potential for Global Collaboration

The global race for dominance is eclipsing the global potential for collaboration. Forming cross-border bonds of trust will be critical to identifying areas where major breakthroughs may occur.

“A century ago, the revelations of quantum mechanics compelled leaders to radically reconsider reality, observation, and the nature of certainty itself. Today, AI, alongside transformative advances in biotech, genetics, materials science, and energy heralds a similar existential pivot. It forces us to confront the profound questions about human agency, truth, and the very fabric of society.”

Jen Zhu Scott, Co-Founder, Technology Leaders Initiative & CEO, Power Dynamics (China Fellowship Program)

ANNOUNCEMENT

Defining a Good Digital Society

As AI becomes the foundation for most human capabilities, we face an urgent challenge: how do we define and evolve what a good digital society looks like? At this year’s Resnick Aspen Action Forum, we will explore what global collaboration looks like when Fellows move from dialogue to action as public ambassadors for humanistic technology leadership.

EXPERIENCE

Structure
